Pharmacological Action:
Involves an interaction with ferriprotoporphyrin IX (“heme”), or ferrous ions, in the acidic parasite food vacuole, which results in the generation of cytotoxic radical species. The generally accepted mechanism of action of peroxide antimalarials involves interaction of the peroxide-containing drug with heme, a hemoglobin degradation byproduct, derived from proteolysis of hemoglobin. This interaction is believed to result in the formation of a range of potentially toxic oxygen and carbon-centered radicals.

Therapeutic indications
This medication is a potent and quick acting antimalarial agent,used for treating chloroquine resistant falciparum malaria,including cerebral malaria.
 

Contra-Indications:
Artemether is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to artemether or other artemisinin compounds Artemether is not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy because of limited data.
 

Warnings:
Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver or kidney disease, heart problem, infection, mental illness, HIV, any allergy, who are taking other medications. It may cause dizziness.
