Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is a non-narotic antitussive agent which is believed to inihibit the cough reflex by acting on the cough centre in the medulla. Clinical studies in patients with both acute and chronic cough have demostrated significant cough suppression. It has a relatively long antitussive action lasting from 6 to 8 hours.
Phenylephrine is sympathomimetic vasoconstrictor that has been used as a decongestant. It is a relatively selective alphaadrenoceptor agonist. The majority of the sympathomimetic action is due to direct stimulation of the adrenoceptors and relatively little is due to an indirect effect via release of noradrenaline. Its pressor action is weaker than that of noradrenaline but of longer duration. At therapeutic doses, it does not cause significant stimulation of the central nervous system
Guaiphenesin is an expectorant. It increases the output of sputum and bronchial secretions by reducing adhesiveness and surface tension. By increasing the volume of bronchial secretions, it reduces the viscosity of tenacious sputum. The increased flow of less viscid secretions also promotes ciliary action. Menthol has a cooling effect on the throat. It has been suggested that the benefits of menthol may be due to an effect on calcium channels of sensory nerves.
COLFRIN syrup is an ideal combination. The ingredients are well absorbed after oral administration and provide prompt relief.
INDICATIONS:
COLFRIN syrup is indicated for the treatment of productive cough when associated with bronchospasm in conditions such as bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis and emphysema.
